GMC Sierra Throughout History

The GMC Sierra is a real chameleon. No, it neither can’t change colours nor hide. However, it did appear on the automobile market under different names: Chevrolet C / K, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Cheyenne, to name but three. The first generation of the GMC Sierra goes back only thirty years ago, but few people really know its debut. Your Denis Breton Chevrolet dealer wants to get you to travel in time and discover the different facets of this pickup.

1st Generation (1987-1998)

The first generation of the GMC Sierra began in 1987 as GMC Sierra I, but people know it better as the Chevrolet C / K. In fact, the C / K first appeared in 1960. It featured a complete line of vehicles including light trucks, chassis cabs, and heavy trucks. In 1975, large pickups were called GMC Silverado, a name previously given to name a top level of quality equipment in the Chevrolet range. The same thing happened with the GMC Sierra, initially designating a level of equipment, it became the name given to designate large pick-ups and chassis-cab. This is the 3rd generation of the Chevrolet C / K.

2nd Generation (1998-2007)

The second generation of the GMC Sierra started with the launch of the GMC Sierra II and the GMC Sierra II HD. Sold by the manufacturer as Sierra, this vehicle is mostly known as Chevrolet Silverado or Chevrolet Cheyenne in Mexico. As we have seen, both Silverado and Sierra used to be only the designation of a level of equipment. Some versions of the Chevrolet C / K pickups bear this name since 1973, yet it became a full-fledged model only in 1998 with the launch of the Silverado / Sierra 1500, a light-duty pickup. Soon after, in 2001, the model Silverado / Sierra HD, a heavy-duty pickup appeared on the market. As soon as it was released, 645,000 copies were sold. It is assumed that its new turbo diesel engine producing 300 horsepower available as an option is the explanation. In 2001, GMC launched a superior version of the Sierra 1500, called the GMC Sierra C3. With a 6-liter V8 engine generating 325 horsepower and four-wheel drive along with additional equipment, it was a well-appreciated model of that time. In 2002, its name changed to "Sierra Denali" and in 2005, the manufacturer decided to replace its engine with a 345-hp V8 6-liter VortecMAX engine, the same used for the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado SS.

3rd Generation (2007-2013)

A new generation of the Silverado / Sierra pickups were launched in 2007. Called the Silveraro / Sierra GMT900, it was either powered by a 4.3-liter V6 engine, a choice of four V8 gasoline engines of 4.8, 5.3, 6, and 6.2-liter, or a Duramax V8 6-liter diesel engine enabling 397 horsepower.

4th Generation (2013-today)

The fourth generation of the Sierra is called Silverado / Sierra GMTK2KK. What a name! Do not be fooled by its name though, its features are what deserves all the attention because of the vehicle’s performance, with an engine generating up to 420 horsepower. Thanks to a car body that can actually accommodate up to 6 people, this pickup is useful for both, to go to work and outing with your family.

The Sierra keeps improving, and GMC continues to surprise us with a stable evolution of its vehicles. It promises practical and easy to use vehicles without too much unnecessary functionality while remaining up to date with the market trends. Take a look at this gem at your Denis Breton Chevrolet dealer and see how the GMC Sierra could meet your needs.
